Harz general
The Harz offers an almost unlimited choice of leisure activities, with an extensive network of paths for the hiker or mountain-biker.
Most of the reservoirs in the Harz Mountains are reserved for drinking water but in the Okertal reservoir the visitor can bathe, take a trip in a large motor-boat, sail or go aqua-diving, or relax in a paddle-boat. At certain times of the year wild water canoeing is possible in the Okertal and the steep sides of the valley are ideal for rock climbing, with paths for the hiker to wander along.
Probably the most popular destination for visitors to the Harz Mountains is the highest mountain in the Harz, the Brocken. For the hiker there are many routs to choose from. Alternatively a ride with the "Harzer Schmalspurbahn", a narrow gauge steam train, which winds its way round the mountain to the summit is an experience not to be missed especially in winter as it puffs its way through the snow-covered countryside. The mountain biker is catered for with 47 signposted routes covering over1400 km to choose from, many of them designed for the beginner as well as the experienced rider.
Dozens of large and small towns and villages are waiting to be explored and picturesque cafés and shops, castles, stately homes, churches and ancient buildings are only a few examples of the variety of attractions offered in the Harz.
